Bopp Packing Tape is a pressure-sensitive tape used for closing or sealing corrugated boxes or for shipping and inventory management. It consists of a pressure-sensitive adhesive coated onto a backing material i.e: polypropylene which is a thermoplastic polymer (making it pliable above a certain temperature, and returning it to the solid state after cooling). Most often the Packing tapes are bi-axially oriented which is a PP film stretched to the machine and cross direction which increases the strength as well as the clarity of the film. The structure also makes the automated and manual application of the packing tape easier. Due to it being a thermoplastic polymer, it could also work in higher and lower temperatures. Not all manufacturers provide tensile strength statistics but industrial grade packing tape should be able to bear longitudinal pressure of around 27 pounds per inch and 44 lbs. per inch, transverse. Its structure being rugged and high tensile makes it an ideal material for packaging and labeling. It is also resistant to abrasion, moisture and various chemical solvents. It is easy to coat, print and even to laminate, which makes it ideal for the manufacture of custom packaging tape. The material also offers minimal elongation (only around 150%, on average), and is burst-resistant making it easy to slit. The average application temperature range for 30-micron, standard thickness BOPP packaging tapes is between 35 and 110 degrees F while the operating temperature range is at 20 to 150 degrees F. Most BOPP films are also non-toxic and therefore safe to use and eco-friendly. Some comply with environmental protection standards, and some are even made of recycled material. Most often, the tape is 48 mm (approx 2-inches) wide but it is also used in 72 mm (approx 3-inches) widths. After coating adhesive on backing material, the Jumbo roll is made which is further slitted on to a paper core having 3” inner diameter for making smaller widths and lengths as per requirement. Most carrier or backing films have specs of 30 to 65 microns thickness. The standard-duty tapes typically have thickness of around 40 microns. Note that this already includes the carrier or backing film and the adhesive. Medium-duty packing tapes typically are around 43 microns thick. Heavy duty adhesives have around 48 microns (1 micron is 1/1000 of a Millimeter). A variety of backing strengths and calipers as well as adhesive formulations are available. The Adhesive Tape family is as follows: Acrylic adhesives are a good option. They do not bond as quickly as hot melt adhesives (it has decent initial adhesion but it features gradual adhesion buildup that require around 24 hours to achieve maximum bond strength), but they have better heat, UV and shear resistance. This type of adhesive is recommended for long-term packaging. Hot melt/Rubber adhesives are one of the most widely used because of the consistent, reliable and quick seals. This kind of adhesive quickly bonds to the surface and offers high tensile strength, which make it one of the best choices for securing shipment. It could adhere well to various surfaces including film and fiberboard. The size of the tape should be adjusted according to the weight and dimensions of the box/carton being sealed. The box must be intact with the material inside to insure maximum performance of the tape. If a tape remains on corrugated box during recycling, a tape should be chosen which does not hinder box recyclability. For example, when taped corrugated boxes are recycled, film backed box sealing tapes do not hinder box recycling: the PSA adhesive stays with the backing and is easily removed. BOPP tapes typically come in the standard colors – clear and brown, although manufacturers now offer them in various colors such as red, pink, orange, yellow, green, black, white, purple and blue PLAIN & PRINTED. Stationery Tape is a pressure-sensitive tape for office use. . The tape is normally slitted to 12 mm width (approx 0.5 inches) Like the Bopp packing tape, its properties are same, but the Inner core is made of Plastic instead of Paper and the Inner Diameter of the tape is 1 Inch. It often comes in one dozen packing. Super clear tape/Super Yellowish Tape is without a doubt one of the most widely used types of adhesive tapes in the world. Super clear tape is categorized as a pressure-sensitive tape, meaning that the adhesive properties of the tape are enacted by nothing more than putting pressure on the tape when applied. Typical uses of this type of tape include packing and shipping as well as moving and storage. One of the primary materials utilized in the production of super clear tape is Bi-axially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film, a thermoplastic polymer film that has been machine-stretched in dual directions to offer excellent clarity and a very low level of “haziness” that is often seen in inferior films. BOPP film provides a smooth surface that is highly resistant to chemical alteration and physical abrasion. In addition, the glossy, high-transparency appearance of BOPP film offers aesthetic benefits as well, as it does not detract from the appearance of packages or other products. The adhesive aspect of super clear tape is typically comprised of an emulsion based acrylic material. The non-adhesive side of the BOPP film is treated with what’s known as a “release agent”, which generally makes the tape easier to work with and manipulate. The side upon which the adhesive will be applied is usually treated with some type of priming material in order to encourage proper bonding with the film. Once the priming process is done, a liquid form of the adhesive is applied in thin layers to film and then rolled into long, high-temperature ovens to complete the process. When the adhesive liquid sits in the hot ovens, the liquid eventually evaporates, causing only the adhesive to remain. The most common width of super clear adhesive tape is 1.88 inches (approx. 48mm), although there are several other popular widths available on the market as well. The usual office-grade length of the average roll of super clear adhesive tape is about 45 meters (50 yards). The utility and versatility of this tape makes it a prime choice for long term storage. Many inferior tape products will turn yellow or become brittle with age, but super clear tape is known for being resistant to UV rays and keeping its elasticity for prolonged periods of time. It is also a desirable choice in terms of its practicality, since it is able to be written upon with permanent markers. This tape also carries the advantage of being lightweight but yet having remarkable tensile strength, which enables it to withstand several pounds of pressure without ripping or breaking. With so many excellent characteristics, it is obvious to see why super clear tape is considered to be such an indispensable part of the average home and office. Printed tape is a pressure-sensitive tape printed with the company logo, design, or seal used for closing or sealing corrugated boxes. It is designed to stick two surfaces together, often in a way which is not visible in the end product, due to it being in between the objects rather than overlaying them. This allows for neater-looking projects and better craftsmanship. Double-sided tape can be either thin or dimensional. Dimensional tape is thicker, and is of particular use to retail and signage uses where it can be used to allow signs or displays to stand out with a 3-D effect. Double-sided tape is created by applying a thin adhesive layer to each side of a carrier material. Most adhesive tapes are manufactured in log form, such as a large 1 to 3 meter wide roll, and then an adhesive tape converter is used to slit the rolls into the required widths. There are 4 main types of Double sided tapes: Double sided Tissue Tape: an easy-to-rip double-sided tape, is created by applying adhesive to two sides of tissue paper, which is then wound with a silicone paper to avoid it sticking to itself, it mostly used in Hot-melt adhesive. Double sided Opp Tape: a plastic based double-sided tape, is created by applying adhesive to two sides of bopp film with is both side corona treated, which is then wound with a silicone paper to avoid it sticking to itself, it mostly used in water-based adhesive. Double sided Cloth Tape: a cloth based double-sided tape, is created by applying adhesive to two sides of cloth, which is then wound with a silicone paper to avoid it sticking to itself, it mostly used in hot-melt and rubber based adhesive. Double sided Foam Tape: a foam based double-sided tape, is created by applying adhesive to two sides of the foam, which is then wound with a silicone paper to avoid it sticking to itself, it mostly used in hot-melt adhesive. Masking tape, also known as sticky tape, is a type of pressure-sensitive tape made of a thin and easy-to-tear paper, and an easily released pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is available in a variety of widths. It is used mainly in painting, to mask off areas that should not be painted. The adhesive is the key element to its usefulness, as it allows the tape to be easily removed without leaving residue or damaging the surface to which it is applied. The tape is available in several strengths, rated on a 1–100 scale based on the strength of the adhesive. Most painting operations will require a tape in the 50 range. Household masking tape is made of an even weaker paper and lower-grade adhesive. When constructed with plastic films instead of paper, masking tapes can be used for more rigorous applications. Polyester-based tapes are used to mask off during etching, plating, and in particular, powder coating. Tapes based on polyimide films can resist molten solder in electronics applications. Glass cloth tapes are often used in powder coating and sandblasting operations. Foil or vinyl tapes are often used in plating. Layered tapes made from multiple materials laminated together can be used for masking flame spray, thermal spray and HVOF. Masking tape can also be used to adhere posters to walls up to the day rating. Masking tape can basically be used for any purpose required of it, and is not limited solely to painting needs. The adhesive applied to a tape is often a critical determining factor for a given masking situation. There are three thin types of adhesives (with many chemical variations of each): rubber-based, acrylic-based, and silicone-based. Rubber-based adhesives generally provide the greatest adhesion, but the lowest temperature resistance. Acrylic-based adhesives offer a wide temperature range, providing adhesion from sub-freezing temperatures up to 275–325 °F (about 150 °C). Silicone-based adhesives provide the highest temperature resistance, with some tapes (such as some polyimide films and glass cloth tapes) allowing for intermittent use up to 500 °F (260 °C). Kraft paper tape is produced through the Kraft process of obtaining pulp out of wood. It provides high elasticity, very high tear resistance and it is used for packaging, where it is appreciated for its strength and reliability. The Kraft paper tape is generally stronger and more resistant than other types of paper tapes, because the kraft process uses special sulfite additives. The sulfite degrades the cellulose more than other chemical components, reducing the percentage of lignin in the wood. Low lignin in the pulp means the paper will be more resistant than other papers, creating a sturdier type of paper. The Kraft paper is considered to be almost pure cellulose, resulting in lower prices and better strength. Usually, this type of paper has a brown tint, with yellow hues, but it can be bleached to pure white. Kraft paper tape is available in numerous colors, but most products have the natural color. White tape is commonly used in applications where whiteness coupled with resistance to yellowing is important, such as laboratory use. Generally, this type of adhesive tape is used for packaging boxes, envelopes and various objects. The mail system is an important consumer of Kraft paper tape because of its relatively low cost, ease of use, and durability. Large envelopes are usually sealed using different types of Kraft tapes, as well as fragile parcels. Reinforced tapes are also available, adding a better protection against pilfering and damage during long hauls and transport. Special water activated Kraft tape is also available on the market that is used in special industrial applications, mainly for machine protection. Special pattern tapes are available for customized packaging, such as presents and special occasions. These tapes can bring a touch of personalization and its warm color will surely benefit each present. Road Surface Marking Tape is a heavy-grade material with reflective beads embedded in the plastic. It is commonly used to mark crosswalks, stop bars, and traffic guidance such as turn lanes, HOV lanes, train crossings, pedestrian crossings, taxi lanes, bus lanes, and bike lanes. There are two ways to apply tape:
Overlay—The application being laid over the surface of the pavement. Using industrial-grade rubber cement, once the tape is combined with the pavement, it should last three years. Major obstacles to estimated life are snow-plows, salt, and mis-application.
Inlay—The tape physically becomes part of the asphalt. Using the heat generated in the paving process, road workers lay special tape on the asphalt in the hardening process, and rollers compress the two together.
The life of the preformed polymer tapes can vary based on the applications. If applied correctly, they can last between 4 and 8 years. However, there have been cases where tape failures start soon after the installation. Conditions that may contribute to the tapes to peel off are the time of year of the installation that is too close to the winter, surface preparation, and workmanship. A technique that can be used to minimize the tape getting scraped off by snowplows is sandblasting a groove into the surface and fixing the tape onto this groove. This technique diminishes the advantage of low labor cost of the tapes. The preformed polymer tape markings are slippery when wet, especially in large sections such as crosswalks, and caution should be used due to poor wet traction. Floor Marking tapes are adhesive tapes used to mark hazards, divide spaces, create aisles, or provide directions. They are commonly used in industrial and manufacturing facilities for floor marking. They are made of multiple different materials, including PVC and vinyl, and vary in thickness from 5-mils to 55-mils for a wide range of durability options for manufacturing facility floor marking. The best floor marking tapes are usually 50 to 60 mils thick. Most tapes come in a variety of color options for other safety standards. Some tapes are made with higher reflectivity and may even glow in the dark. Floor marking tapes can also be useful for helping workers put materials and equipment back in the right place, making it a key 5S, Lean manufacturing implementation tools. Creating distinctions between finished goods, raw goods, to-be-repaired goods, and equipment ensures mistakes are minimized and productivity and safety are both at the highest levels. Tapes are an effective replacement for paints. Tapes are much faster and easier to install and replace, which dramatically reduces down times related to painting aisles and rails. Many floor tapes are scuff and break resistant, unlike paints that will chip and scratch off. And most of all, tapes are much easier to store and transport; they have much higher shelf lives than paints that, if stored improperly, won’t last long. Electrical tape (or insulating tape) is a type of pressure-sensitive tape used to insulate electrical wires and other materials that conduct electricity. It can be made of many plastics. Cloth tape/Duct Tape, is cloth- or scrim-backed pressure-sensitive tape, often coated with polyethylene. There are a variety of constructions using different backings and adhesives. One variation is black gaffer tape, which is designed to be non-reflective and cleanly removed, unlike standard duct tape. Another variation is heat-resistant foil (not cloth) duct tape useful for sealing heating and cooling ducts, produced because standard duct tape fails quickly when used on heating ducts.
